A Pretty Girl’s Guide to:
Iconic NHL Duos (Part Two)
If Part One was the starter pack of current NHL duos, Part Two is where we get a little deeper into the lore, because not every iconic hockey duo is obvious from a stat sheet. Some duos are legendary because they defined an entire franchise era, some are important because they represent the future of a team, some are beloved because the fanbase turned their friendship into a subplot, and some are “if you know, you know” pairings that make hockey feel less like a sport you are studying and more like a world you are slowly being let into.
NHL duos are so fun because they are not always just about goals and assists, it’s about chemistry, history, personality, loyalty, rebuilds, inside jokes, and the kind of tiny emotional details that fans remember forever. So here is Part Two of the NHL duos you need to know!
Alex Ovechkin & Nicklas Backstrom
Washington Capitals
The franchise-soul duo.
Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom are one of the most important duos in modern NHL history. This is not a “new and current” duo in the same way as some of the younger pairings on this list, this is legacy. This is the duo that defined the Washington Capitals for more than a decade.
Ovechkin is the goal scorer, the captain, the face of the Capitals, the record chaser. Ovechkin is the player who made Washington feel bigger, louder, and more dangerous every time he stepped on the ice.
Backstrom was the playmaker. The calm, brilliant center who could find Ovechkin in the exact spot everyone in the arena knew he wanted to be, and still somehow make the pass work. He was not always as loud as Ovechkin, but that was the point. Ovi was the thunder. Backstrom was the quiet genius setting up the storm.
Together, they were one of hockey’s great long-term partnerships. They helped turn Washington from a talented team into a Stanley Cup champion, and their connection became one of the defining images of the Capitals’ best era. What makes them special is that their duo feels almost literary. Ovechkin had the big personality, the massive shot, the public spotlight while Backstrom had the patience, vision, and understated brilliance. They were different, but they made perfect sense together. Even now, when talking about current NHL lore, you cannot really understand Washington without understanding Ovechkin and Backstrom.
Why you need to know them: Because they are one of the defining duos of the modern NHL and the heart of Washington’s greatest era.
Nico Hischier & Jack Hughes
New Jersey Devils
The captain and the star boy duo.
Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes are one of the best examples of a duo that represents a franchise’s identity shift. The Devils spent years trying to build their next great core, and Hischier and Hughes became the center of that vision. They are not the same type of player, which is exactly why the pairing works.
Hischier is the captain who is responsible, polished, competitive, and trusted in every situation. He has that composed leader energy who’s not flashy for the sake of being flashy, but incredibly important to the way the Devils want to play. He gives New Jersey structure.
Hughes is the electricity. He is fast, creative, slippery, and one of the most exciting players in the league when he is fully on. He plays with that “something could happen every time he touches the puck” energy, which is exactly what makes him such a dangerous offensive player.
Together, they are the two faces of the Devils’ modern core. Hischier is the foundation and Hughes is the spark. Hischier gives you leadership and two-way maturity while Hughes gives you highlight-reel skill and star power. This duo is also important because it shows how a team can have more than one kind of main character. Hughes might get the louder attention, but Hischier is just as essential to the story. You need both to understand why New Jersey became exciting again.
Why you need to know them: Because one captain and one superstar are both crucial centerpieces of the Devils’ current era.
Jamie Benn & Tyler Seguin
Dallas Stars
The old-school Dallas duo.
Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin are ultimate Dallas Stars lore.
They are not the shiny new duo anymore, and that is exactly what makes them interesting. Benn and Seguin represent years of Stars hockey – the high expectations, the playoff runs, the disappointments, the resets, the veteran leadership, and the slow evolution of Dallas into one of the deeper teams in the league.
Benn is the captain and the tone-setter. He has that old-school hockey energy where he plays physical, intense, stubborn, and deeply tied to the identity of the franchise. He is the kind of player who feels like he has been part of the team’s furniture forever, in the best way.
Seguin brought the star power. Skilled, confident, productive, and central to Dallas’ offensive identity for years, he became one of the faces of the team after arriving from Boston. For a long time, Benn and Seguin were the Dallas duo people thought of first.
What makes them iconic now is not that they are carrying the entire team alone. Dallas has newer stars, younger talent, and a deeper core, but Benn and Seguin are still important because they are the bridge between eras. They are the familiar names from the previous chapter who are still part of the current story. For new fans, they are a reminder that every team has layers. The Stars are not just Jason Robertson, Roope Hintz, Wyatt Johnston, and Jake Oettinger. They are also Benn and Seguin — the veterans who helped define what Dallas hockey looked like before the next wave fully arrived.
Why you need to know them: Because Benn and Seguin are one of the most recognizable long-running duos in Stars history.
Kirill Kaprizov & Mats Zuccarello
Minnesota Wild
The unlikely besties duo.
Kirill Kaprizov and Mats Zuccarello are one of the most beloved chemistry duos in hockey, but on paper, they might not look like the obvious pairing. Kaprizov is Minnesota’s superstar winger who’s dynamic, skilled, creative, and the player who changed the entire energy of the Wild franchise. Zuccarello is the veteran playmaker that’s smaller, smart, crafty, experienced, and beloved basically everywhere he goes, but together, they work.
Zuccarello has the vision and patience to find Kaprizov in dangerous spots. Kaprizov has the skill and finishing ability to turn those plays into magic. Their connection is not just productive, it’s fun! They look like they enjoy playing together, and that matters because fans can feel when chemistry is real. I mean, after all, they’ve talked about how they’re basically brothers.
This duo also has major “fan favorite” energy. Kaprizov is the star Minnesota had been waiting for, and Zuccarello became one of the players who helped unlock him. In a league where fans love friendship, chemistry, and little personality moments, Kaprizov and Zuccarello are an easy duo to root for.
Why you need to know them: Because they are one of the NHL’s most naturally charming star/playmaker duos.
Trevor Zegras & Jamie Drysdale
Philadelphia Flyers
The reunited duo
Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale are not just a hockey duo, they’re like a damn romance book. Their friendship and connection became popular when they were both young Anaheim Ducks, part of a new generation that made the Ducks feel fun, chaotic, and very online (Zegras was dating a D'amelio sister at this time). Zegras brought the flash with the highlight-reel plays, confidence, personality. Drysdale brought the smooth, skilled defenseman presence who’s calm, mobile, talented, and part of that same youthful core.
Then hockey did what hockey does – trades happened. The Ducks’ rebuild shifted and Drysdale was moved to Philadelphia. For a while, the duo became more of a memory than a current pairing. And then the plot twisted again when Zegras also ended up in Philadelphia.
That is what makes this duo so fun for Part Two! It’s not just two players on the same team, it’s reunion energy, where old Anaheim lore gets dropped into a new Flyers chapter, and it’s the exact kind of hockey coincidence that makes fans immediately start connecting dots. For the Flyers, Zegras and Drysdale bring skill, youth, and familiarity. They also bring a little bit of personality to a team and fanbase that absolutely does not do boring. Philadelphia is intense, passionate, and not always gentle with its athletes, so the Zegras/Drysdale reunion has a totally different flavor than it did in Anaheim.
In Anaheim, they felt like the fun young besties. In Philadelphia, they feel like two characters from an earlier season who got recast into a grittier reboot.
Why you need to know them: Because their friendship, Ducks history, and Flyers reunion make them one of the cutest best friend duos in the league.
Sam Dickinson & Michael Misa
San Jose Sharks
The prospect-core duo.
Sam Dickinson and Michael Misa are not a legacy duo yet, they’re a future duo, and sometimes, those are the most exciting ones to learn early. The San Jose Sharks are in the middle of building something new, and their young core is the reason the rebuild has started to feel more interesting. Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith are the obvious headliners, but Dickinson and Misa are part of the next layer of the story.
Misa is a highly skilled young forward with major offensive upside. He represents the kind of talent a rebuilding team needs if it wants to become genuinely dangerous again. A rebuild cannot rely on one player alone, it needs waves of young talent.
Dickinson gives the Sharks another major piece, but from the blue line. A young defenseman with size, skill, and top-pair potential is incredibly valuable, especially for a team trying to build a long-term foundation.
Together, Dickinson and Misa show the NHL that San Jose is not just collecting names, they’re building a timeline. Celebrini and Smith may be the first names people mention, but Dickinson and Misa are part of why the future could become genuinely scary. They are the kind of duo that hardcore fans start tracking before casual fans fully catch on, not because they are already legendary, but because they could become part of the Sharks’ next real era.
Why you need to know them: Because they are part of San Jose’s future core and could become a major prospect-era duo as the rebuild develops.
Nathan MacKinnon & Gabriel Landeskog
Colorado Avalanche
The heart-and-fire duo.
Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog are not just an iconic Avalanche duo because they won together, they’re iconic because they feel like the emotional core of Colorado’s modern era. MacKinnon is the fire, he’s intense, explosive, competitive, and one of the most dominant players in the NHL. Landeskog is the heart, the captain, the steady presence, and the player who helped shape the Avalanche identity long before they became Stanley Cup champions.
Together, MacKinnon and Landeskog represent the soul of this Avalanche era.
They were there for the hard years, the rise, and the payoff. They went from being part of Colorado’s future to becoming Stanley Cup champions together in 2022. That alone would make them iconic, but Landeskog’s long injury absence added another layer to the story. For years, the Avalanche had MacKinnon, Cale Makar, and all the talent in the world, but there was still this very obvious missing piece emotionally. Landeskog was not just a player they were waiting on, he was their captain, so his return was extra special.
MacKinnon even spoke about how much Landeskog’s return meant, calling him the kind of person and presence you can’t really replace. Then Landeskog, very on-brand, cut him off with a “that’s enough” type of reaction, which only made the whole thing more perfect. It was funny, but also kind of devastatingly sweet to know that he had been waiting years for Landy’s return.
Why you need to know them: Because they are Avalanche legacy, leadership, and emotion all in one duo.
Nathan MacKinnon & Cale Makar
Colorado Avalanche
The superstar cheat-code duo.
Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar are iconic because they represent the terrifying version of the Colorado Avalanche: fast, skilled, confident, and almost unfair when everything is clicking. MacKinnon is explosive, intense, competitive, and one of the most dominant forwards in the NHL. Makar is smooth, calm, controlled, ridiculously smart, and the kind of defenseman who can take over a game without ever looking rushed. Together, MacKinnon and Makar are basically Colorado’s ultimate weapon. Unlike MacKinnon and Landeskog, who feel like the emotional heart of the Avalanche, MacKinnon and Makar feel like the team’s pure superstar engine!
What makes them so dangerous is that they impact the game from completely different places. MacKinnon attacks with speed and force, driving play like he has personally decided the other team should suffer. Makar controls the ice from the blue line with skating, vision, and the kind of decision-making that makes everything look effortless. While one is pure power, the other is pure polish, and together, they make the Avalanche feel like they are playing the game in fast-forward.
They were also central to Colorado’s 2022 Stanley Cup run, which solidified them as one of the defining duos of this Avalanche era. MacKinnon had already been the face of the team’s rise, while Makar became the generational defenseman who pushed them into another level. It’s not just that they are both elite individually, it’s that every other team fears them.
Why you need to know them: The Avalanche’s danger comes from these two with their speed, skill, star power, and Stanley Cup legacy all in one duo.
Brandon Hagel & Anthony Cirelli
Tampa Bay Lightning
The relentless two-way duo.
Brandon Hagel and Anthony Cirelli are not the flashiest duo on the Lightning, but that’s what makes them so important. They are the kind of players who do all the annoying, exhausting, necessary things that make a team hard to play against. Hagel brings chaos, pressure, speed, and that never-stop-moving energy, while Cirelli brings structure, defensive responsibility, and one of the smartest two-way games on the team. Together, Hagel and Cirelli are the duo you send out when you need the other team to have a miserable shift.
They are very Tampa Bay-coded because the Lightning have never just been about star power. Yes, they have the elite names, but their identity has also been built around players who can win battles, kill plays, pressure opponents, and make responsible hockey feel dangerous, which Hagel and Cirelli fit perfectly. These two can play against top competition, contribute offensively, and make life extremely irritating for anyone trying to create clean chances. Their chemistry isn’t something noticeable off the rip, it’s more like when you’re watching your team play them, you start thinking “why does this line keep ruining everything for us?” They are work ethic, discipline, and pressure in duo form.
Why you need to know them: They are the Lightning’s gritty, responsible, secretly essential duo who aren’t always the loudest names, but absolutely the kind of players winning teams need.
Quinn Hughes & Brock Faber
Minnesota Wild
The future-of-the-blue-line duo.
Quinn Hughes and Brock Faber are an iconic duo because they represent the next era of American defensemen who are smart, smooth, composed, and built for the modern NHL. Hughes is the superstar, the game-breaker, the defenseman who can control the entire pace of a shift with his skating and creativity. Faber is the calm, mature, reliable defenseman who plays with the kind of poise that makes you forget how young he still is. Together, Hughes and Faber feel like the future of Minnesota Wild’s (and Team USA’s) blue line.
What makes this duo so interesting is that they bring two different kinds of defenseman energy to the Wild. Hughes is dynamic and creative, the kind of player who turns defense into offense almost instantly, while Faber is steady, intelligent, and responsible, the kind of player coaches trust because he rarely looks overwhelmed. It’s like one brings the sparkle and pizazz and the other brings the security.
These two also have another layer – they played on Team USA together! They’re not just building chemistry in Minnesota, they also represent the next era of American defensemen who are smart, smooth, composed, and built for the modern NHL. Hughes brings established superstar energy, while Faber brings that Minnesota hockey identity that’s hardworking, reliable, and deeply trusted.
Why you need to know them: They’re Minnesota’s (and Team USA’s) new high-IQ blue-line duo who are creative, calm, and extremely dangerous.
Matthew Schaefer & Mathew Barzal
New York Islanders
The new-era Islanders duo.
Matthew Schaefer and Mathew Barzal are iconic because they represent two different sides of the Islanders’ future. Barzal is the established star, the fast, creative, playmaking forward who has been the face of the franchise’s offensive identity for years. Schaefer is the new hope, the No. 1 overall pick defenseman expected to become a major piece of the Islanders’ next chapter. Together, Schaefer and Barzal feel like the bridge between what the Islanders have been and what they are trying to become.
Barzal has carried the weight of being the Islanders’ most recognizable offensive talent for a long time. He is skilled, fast, and exciting in a way that stands out on a team often known more for structure than flash. Schaefer, on the other hand, enters as the future-facing piece as a young defenseman with huge expectations and the kind of franchise-player label that immediately makes fans emotionally invested. This isn’t a long-established duo yet, but they will be, mark my words. This duo is all about the star who has been waiting for the franchise to build something bigger around him, and the young defenseman who could help define the next era. If Schaefer becomes what the Islanders hope he can be, his connection with Barzal could become one of the most important parts of the team’s identity and NHL hockey. Schaefer is already shaping up to be the missing key player this team needed.
Why you need to know them: They’re the Islanders hope, transition, and future all in one duo with the established star and the golden rookie and a whole franchise watching. Also, no one can hate Schaefer, he’s loved by hockey fans no matter the team.
Wyatt Johnston & Thomas Harley
Dallas Stars
The young-core duo.
Wyatt Johnston and Thomas Harley are iconic because they represent why the Dallas Stars’ future feels so dangerous. Johnston is the calm, clutch, young forward who already plays like he belongs in big moments, and Harley is the smooth, growing, offensively talented defenseman who keeps adding more dimension to Dallas’ blue line. Together, Johnston and Harley are becoming a problem.
Dallas has a lot of established talent, but Johnston and Harley are part of the reason the Stars feel built for both now and later, whereas most teams find themselves stuck. Johnston has already shown that he can handle pressure, produce, and be trusted in important situations despite his age. Harley brings that modern defenseman energy with his skating, elite puck movement, confidence, and the ability to turn defensive plays into offensive chances.
This duo is still only getting started, they’re not just young players with potential, they’re already meaningful pieces on a highly competitive team. The Stars are not waiting years for them to matter, they already do.
Why you need to know them: They are the Dallas future arriving early! They’re young, composed, talented, and already playoff-relevant.
Linus Ullmark & Jeremy Swayman
Ottawa Senators & Boston Bruins
The goalie-hug duo.
Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman are iconic because everyone loves goalies, but their relationship just made fans fall more in love with this position. On the ice, they were elite. Off the ice, they became one of the most wholesome and recognizable duos in hockey because of their post-win goalie hugs. It was simple, sweet, and somehow turned into one of the Bruins’ most beloved rituals. Together, Ullmark and Swayman were the rare goalie duo that felt like both a competitive advantage and comfort.
What made them special was that they were not framed as rivals, even though goalies are often competing for starts. Instead, they looked genuinely supportive of each other. Ullmark brought veteran calm and high-level goaltending, while Swayman brought younger, emotional, rising-star energy. Their dynamic made Boston’s crease feel united, which is not always easy when two goalies are both trying to prove they should be the guy.
Their best season together became part of Bruins history, and the goalie hug became bigger than just a celebration. That hug became a symbol of friendship, chemistry, and a team that was winning a lot, everything Boston fans want from their team. Even though Ullmark is no longer with Boston, the duo still matters because fans remember how special that era felt.
Why you need to know them: They’re one of the most beloved goalie duos of the modern NHL who were elite in net, adorable after wins, and forever remembered for the hug.
Now that we have part one and two wrapped up, tell us who have we missed? We may add them to part three!
